San Mateo County Proclaims April 2008 "Climate Change Awareness Month"
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- On Tuesday, April 8th, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors will proclaim April 2008 as "Climate Change Awareness Month." Staff from the Health Department, RecycleWorks, the Department of Parks, and the County Manager's Office have been working with community groups to inform residents about how climate change impacts the lives of people living in San Mateo County and around the world.
"As one of the largest employers on the Peninsula, San Mateo County government has a direct influence on lifestyle choices and the impact of those choices personal health and on the health of the planet," said Supervisor Adrienne Tissier, who sponsored the proclamation by the Board of Supervisors. "We have a responsibility to ourselves, our neighbors, our children and to the overall community to do everything possible to reduce, re-use and to recycle."
Numerous events are planned for Climate Change Awareness Month, including:
- Tuesday, April 2, at 7 p.m., Prof. Robert Cormia from Foothill College will speak at the Coyote Point Museum, 1651 Coyote Point Drive in San Mateo, about the steps people can take to be part of the climate solution. - Wednesday, April 9, Dr. Louise Bedsworth, Research Fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California, will speak about the structural changes needed in order to prepare for the health impacts of climate change. - Thursday, April 10, the Green Building Exchange will host the "Green Your Home Fair," which will feature ideas and inspiration for low cost energy and water conservation. - Saturday, April 12, Serramonte (Daly City) and Tanforan (San Bruno) malls will host Earth Day celebrations. Contact mall management for more information.
- Saturday, April 19, there will be a host of environmental clean-up activities throughout San Mateo County. To learn about activities in your city, visit www.flowstobay.org.
- Monday, April 28, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Dr. Andrew Gunther, Executive Director of the Center for Ecosystem Management and Restoration, will present “Climate Change: Causes, Consequences, Solutions” at the South San Francisco Municipal Services Building at 30 Arroyo Drive in South San Francisco. "There is a direct connection between climate change and our health," said Dr. Scott Morrow, San Mateo County Health Officer. "We each need to commit to make changes in our lives that will lead to a healthier climate. We need to travel, eat, live, and work differently. The changes that will create a healthier climate have the added benefit of making us healthier, too."
