Thermometer Exchange set for Earth Day, April 22

SAN MATEO - Gather up all the mercury thermometers in your house and trade them in for mercury-free, NexTemp personal, reusable, oral thermometers at the free thermometer exchange STOPPP is sponsoring at 12 San Mateo County locations from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Earth Day, Monday, April 22.

STOPPP is the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program of the City/County Association of Governments. It seeks to reduce the amount of pollution that enters San Francisco Bay and other local waters through stormwater runoff and to educate residents about what they can do to combat stormwater pollution.

Mercury, an element that does not break down in the environment, is a prime stormwater pollutant. In fact, a mercury fever thermometer, like those used in the home, contains enough mercury to potentially contaminate 9,000 cans of tuna fish.

The Earth Day thermometer exchanges will take place at:

  • Belmont - Patio area of the Cottage at Twin Pines Park
  • Burlingame - Fire Station # 34, 799 California Dr.
  • Colma - Corporation Yard, 601 F St.
  • Daly City - Westlake Community Center,145 Lake Merced Blvd.
  • Half Moon Bay - City Hall, 501 Main St.
  • Menlo Park - Burgess Recreation Building, 700 Alma St.
  • Millbrae - Millbrae Community Center, 477 Lincoln Circle
  • Pacifica - Pacifica Community Center, 540 Crespi Drive
  • Redwood City - Corporation Building, 1400 Broadway
  • San Bruno - City Hall, 567 El Camino Real
  • San Mateo - County Health Center Lobby, 222 W. 39th Ave. at Edison
  • South San Francisco - Municipal Services Building, 33 Arroyo at El Camino Real

Mercury thermometers should be transported inside their original plastic case or sealed in two plastic bags. Anyone who is not able to make this date should call the Household Hazardous Waste Appointment line at 650-363-4718 toproperly dispose of mercury items.
