Care for adults with dementia and behavioral disturbances to be discussion topic

The crisis in care for adults with dementia and behavioral disturbances in San Mateo County will be the topic of a panel discussion from 6-8 p.m. Feb. 6 at San Mateo County Health Services Agency, 225 W. 37th Ave., San Mateo.

Among the speakers will be Barbara Yates, MD, and Diane Dworkin, LCSW, of Senior Mental Health Services; Gordon Giles, PhD of Crestwood Behavioral Corp.; Melissa Welch, MD, medical director of the Health Plan of San Mateo; and Bill Reiter of the Family Caregiver Alliance.

The discussion will be sponsored by San Mateo County's Mental Health Board and Commission on Aging.

The speakers will tackle the lack of appropriate treatment for people with dementia and related behavioral issues, a growing problem for the health care systems and for family members who struggle to provide adequate care and a safe environment for loved ones. The evening will be devoted to exploring strategies to develop programs, funding and policy solutions.

The discussion will take place in Multipurpose Room A & B, and refreshments will be served. The public is invited. For further information, contact Mary Nunnery at 650-573-2544.

Websites with information on the discussion topic include www.caregiver.org, www.alz.org and www.alzheimers.org.
