I became a foster parent. My daughters’ friends would always come to the house when she was away from home. So I guess I was like the house mom or the neighborhood mom that everyone can come to and talk to, because you know I gave them a chance and hear what they said. And I felt that there was a need for it. I called the San Mateo [the foster care] Children Protective Services and I took classes, and I became a foster parent about 20 years ago. I have taken care of teenage girls only from the age of 8 to 18, I have had every nationality. Yo hablo espanol tambien y cuido muchachos muy bien.
I can sum up being a foster parent in a couple of words. A great chance to meet kids, to know them, to give them a helping hand, ‘cuz they’re the next generation. I would say to others that it’s great being a foster parent, you have to give them love and you have to have empathy, not sympathy. You have to have patience, and that there be a lot of good things coming and a lot of bad things coming but you can always straighten out the bad things. Foster parenting is great, you have to have a big heart, you have to have a lot of patience and you cannot take it personally.
